The Palace of Westminster, better known as the Houses of Parliament, is a world landmark, probably one of the best known and most photographed buildings in the United Kingdom. It houses of course the Mother of Parliaments governing the United Kingdom and in days gone by the great British Empire. The first Palace was built on the site in the 11th Century on the edge of the Thames near the great Abbey of Westminster. It was the private residence of kings and queens for many hundreds of years and the old palace building was destroyed in 1834. The new building in the gothic style was designed and built by Giles Barry. The work commenced in 1840. Over a century later John Newton again were called in to help with damp proofing some of the lower ground floor rooms which were suffering water impregnation from the adjacent river. The ventilated membrane Newtonite was applied and successfully maintained a dry environment. Again in the 1980’s, John Newton supplied their Newlath damp proof membrane for similar remedial work in some of the other lower ground floor rooms. The Newlath damp proof membrane is a dimpled polyethylene material with mesh thermic welded to the front which can receive a plaster or render. The air gap behind formed by the dimples in the membranes allows for the circulation of air thus enabling the dampness to dry out. Many millions of metres of Newlath following its predecessor Newtonite have been sold over the last seventy years and this product continues to be highly regarded by the building and remedial industry as a permanent solution for rising and penetrating damp.
