Introducing The Titan-2 Pumping System – Unique Octagonal Sump Shape

The Titan-2 is a basic pumping system incorporating:

an octagonal sump chamber

class leading pumps

lock & seal lid and frame

high water level alarm

internal pipe-work, one way valves and

quick release shut-off valve for quick release of the pumps for servicing.

The sump can be used with single pumps or twin pumps via a single discharge line. The unique octagonal sump shape ensures structural stability and provides eight large surfaces for inlets into the pump of up to 110mm via an optional wall flange. The sump chamber also features a flared base to prevent flotation. As a fully built system, the Titan-2 includes all internal pipe and pipe fittings ready for 50mm discharge pipe.

Extended Footing Means Easier Installation

A key advantage of this style of chamber over the original Titan is that it has an extended footing around the bottom circumference meaning you no longer need to fit coach bolts to secure it against vertical movement due to potential water pressure. It also has flat sides making it easier to fit pipework through the chamber wall. Its design is intended to work in conjunction with the recessed manhole style lid and can accept various finishes into the recessed tray of the lid such as tiles, screed, wooden floor etc.

Less Digging Required

The volume of this chamber is equivalent to the original Titan but it is shorter so there is less digging involved to install the chamber into the ground. Please see the dimensions drawing on the datasheet.

The Titan-2 is ideal for the removal of water from cellars and basements, and the collection and pumping of surface water

“The Titan 2 has been designed by John Newton & Company and produced in the UK for the waterproofing of smaller basement areas. The new improved design will allow for a cleaner and quicker installations for the same price as the original Titan” – Warren Muschialli, MD, John Newton & Company

Key Benefits of Titan-2

• Compatible with Newton NP and CP clean water pumps
• Fully built system includes all internal pipe and pipe fittings ready for 50mm discharge pipe.
• One-way valve for each pump included.
• Quick release coupling for each pump for easy installation and removal for servicing.

South London Victorian Terrace - Newton Diathonite Thermal Plaster used to upgrade existing London property to current Building Regulations requirements

Diathonite thermal plaster used to upgrade existing London property to current Building Regulations requirements

This single skin Victorian Terrace had been protected from driving and penetrating moisture with Newtonite damp proof membrane for 50 years. The existing tenant wanted to upgrade the property in line with the current Building Regulation by incorporating insulation. Because the property was tenanted and being utilised as a functioning office, the insulation need to be applied externally to avoid disruption and down time for the tenant.

Methodology For Installing Diathonite Thermal Plaster

Once the Newtonite Lath had been removed from the external elevation, Newton Diathonite Thermal Plaster was applied via specialist spray equipment to the entire façade element. The specification for the works involved applying a “splatter coat” of Diathonite to the extremely dry and porous London Stock to take any excessive suction out of the substrate. Once this was achieved Newton Diathonite Thermal Plaster was spray applied to the required thickness of 75mm in a single coat application to achieve the required U Value of 0.3 (W/m 2K)

After the Diathonite had been applied to the substrate, a specialist coloured breathable mineral skim finishing coat was applied to protect the Diathonite from driving and penetrating moisture.

Benefits of Using Diathonite Thermal Plaster

Newton Diathonite’s unique qualities allowed for the project to achieve the required U values in a single coat application without internal disruption. The product characteristics of Diathonite are truly unique in the UK market.

=>Composed predominately of cork and lime, Diathonite Thermal Plaster is the most “Eco Friendly” thermal render system in the United Kingdom.
=>The cork content of Diathonite not only aids thermal performance but also has excellent acoustic properties.
=>Diathonite Thermal Plaster keeps the heat in and the cold out, it lets the walls breathe!
=>As a seamless system it removes any risk of cold bridging – a common problem with other systems.
=>Diathonite also has excellent fire ratings (certified as A1) when compared to other forms of rigid insulation.

Diathonite Thermal Plaster is exclusively distributed in the United Kingdom by John Newton and Company Ltd – for further information please call 020 7237 1217 or e-mail info@newton-membranes.co.uk

Barn Conversion, Sussex - Waterproofing a barn conversion in a listed farmhouse with Newton System 500

Waterproofing a Barn Conversion, Sussex with Newton System 500

The client required high grade structural waterproofing to a listed farmhouse which was undergoing extensive renovations. Part of the renovation involved lowering the inside floor level to gain head height. Once the floor level was lowered the external ground level was unable to be lowered for structural considerations.

Newton Specialist Basement Contractor, Cavity Tech designed and installed a robust internal waterproofing system with Newton System 500.

Newton System 500 was the ideal solution for this barn conversion in Sussex as it is deemed ‘reversible’ – a requirement when treating Listed Buildings – and holds BBA and Listed Building certification.

Methodology for Waterproofing the Sussex Barn Conversion

Newton System 500 meets all Listed Building requirements as it is deemed “reversible”

The waterproofing project presented itself on two levels with the higher level having earth bearing against the external walls by 500mm on three elevations and the remaining elevation was open to the elements. The lower level of the farmhouse was fully retaining on all aspects.

Once the new floor slab was laid, Cavity Tech installed Newton Basedrain around the wall floor junction and then positioned 50mm of closed cell insulation directly to the slab. Once the insulation was in situ, Newton 508 was laid directly on the insulation as a vapour barrier. A further layer of insulation was then installed to upgrade the U values to building regulations standard then a 65mm screed was incorporated.

The upper level of the property was able to be drained out to an open elevation and the lower level was directed into a fully serviced Newton sump and pump to remove the water. The internal walls were lined with a combination of Newton 508 and Newton 508 Mesh membranes to ceiling height on the brick elevations and to sole plate height in the timber framed aspect of build.

The meshed membrane was rendered and on the non meshed material an independent studd wall was incorporated.

Benefits of using Newton System 500 to Waterproof this Barn Conversion

Application of BBA Certified Newton 508 Cavity Drain Membrane to the vaulted areas

The existing tunnel network connecting London Bridge Underground to “The Shard” needed to be upgraded to house facilities for the Transport for London bus drivers as a part of the overall London Bridge Quarter development. The main contractor Mace, commissioned the services of Newton and Stonehouse Basements to design and install the Newton System 500 internal drained cavity system to upgrade the existing tunnels to a Grade 3 Habitable environment in accordance with BS8102:2009.

Methodology

Stonehouse Basements design was to install the BBA certified 508 Cavity Drain Membrane to the vaulted areas. The 508 has an integral key for direct/plaster applications and is mechanically fixed with Newton NuSeal Plugs with Newton WaterSeal Rope wrapped around the neck of the plug to form a waterproof seal. The meshed membrane application required strategic mechanical fixing to hold the weight of the applied finish. Once the membrane was installed to the walls, timber battens were applied into the heads of the NuSeal plugs in preparation for receiving plasterboard. Fixing into the head of the NuSeal plugs meant that the membrane system was not compromised as the NuSeal plugs act as a waterproof rawl plug. Newton Basedrain was installed at the wall floor junction within a margin formed in the concrete slab.

Newton 101F slurry was applied to the rebate and also out onto the slab to prevent moisture vapour transgressing out across the slab. As this project was at first floor level any ingression of water was managed into the Newton Basedrain conduit and removed from the internal space to lower level gravity drainage.

Result

WaterSeal Rope was wrapped around the neck of the plugs to form a waterproof seal

The Type C drained cavity protection option meant no messy preparation works to the existing vaults and that any water ingression could be easily removed without the need for a sump and pump option. As the project was very time sensitive, there was no need for extensive drying out times as required with other Type A tanking alternatives.

In addition, Mace the main contractor could get the benefits of an insured backed guarantee by using a Newton Specialist Basement Contractor for the design and installation.

Benefits

The BBA accredited Newton Membrane System was applied with minimal surface preparation without expensive preparation works which would have been required with an applied wet tanking system.

The client could delegate the whole project to Stonehouse Basements with peace of mind of an insured backed guarantee for the works.

“The expanded range of Newton products allowed us to devise a unique solution to a unique central London situation. The vaulted area is very sensitive with mainline trains running directly above and the main rail concourse below. I could only consider this contract with the security of the proven Newton system behind our long term guarantee” – Graham Stone, Stonehouse Basements

New Build Basement, Hampstead

Combined Systems Type A and C Waterproofing Protection provides Grade 3 Habitable Environment to BS8102:2009

Project Details Architect – Adams Architecture
Main Contractor – Walter Lilly
Newton Specialist Basement Contractor – MacLennan-LSE

To discuss any waterproofing project, for new build basements or basement refurbishment projects our technical team would be delighted to help, call us on 020 7237 1217

Newton Specialist Basement Contractor MacLennan-LSE was commissioned by the client to work with the architect to design a robust structural waterproofing scheme to achieve a Grade 3 habitable environment to this extensive new build basement project in Hampstead North London

Methodology for Waterproofing this New Build Basement in Hampstead

MacLennan-LSE designed and installed a combination system of Type A sprayed Polyprufe and Type C drained cavity protection Newton System 500 to waterproof the new build basement.

The internal system involved “curtain hanging” the Newton 508 membrane to all internal 250mm thick reinforced concrete retaining walls as a means of diverting any water that was to enter through the construction joints to the wall floor junction. At the wall floor junction, Newton Basedrain was installed within a layer of “closed cell insulation” with another layer of Newton 508 installed on top of the insulation layer.

With the layers in situ, a 65mm screed was installed with underfloor heating embedded prior to the wall finishes (independent dry lining system) being installed. With the Newton 508 membrane raised up higher than the top of the Basedrain, any water ingression was then displaced through the weight of the screed back to the Basedrain for removal to dual sump and pump systems.

Result

MacLennan-LSE was able to install the combined system in the middle of winter with adverse weather conditions not effecting the time of installation of the system as is often the case with external waterproofing applications.

Benefits of Waterproofing the New Build Basement with Type A and Type C Systems

BBA approved Newton System 500 was able to be designed, installed and guaranteed as a package by MacLennan-LSE.

As the system was installed by MacLennan-LSE, they were able to take full PI on design and offer a 20 year insured backed guarantee.

The internal system installed required minimal surface preparation and was not affected by the constraints of near zero degree temperatures that were on site

Benefits Of A Combined Waterproofing Approach

BS8102:2009: The Implications

When tasked to waterproof retaining structures in accordance with BS8102:2009 “Code of Practice for Protection of Below Ground Structures Against Water from the Ground”, professional waterproofing designers should now consider using more than one type of waterproofing to provide enhanced protection of the structure to achieve the necessary environmental grade.

Newton provide waterproofing products for all three types of waterproofing as defined within BS8102:2009:

Type A (barrier) protection – Newton System 100 – Cementitious Products, Newton System 200 – Deck and Roofing and Newton System 400 – External Waterproofing
Type B (structurally integral) protection – Newton System 300 – Waterproofing of Concrete Structures
Type C (drained) protection – Newton System 500 – Cavity Drain Waterproofing

Combination strategies provide increased waterproofing protection to the structure. The provision of a maintainable waterproofing system is recommended within BS8102:2009 and Newton can provide maintainable options for all three types of waterproofing defined by the British Standard.

Installation of Newton 302 InjectionHose or Newton 304 PolyProof-Inject allows for re-grouting and resin sealing of defects that may appear post construction and Newton System 500, incorporating Newton Basedrain, provides a maintainable waterproofing system that can be accessed without detriment to internal finishes.

Waterproofing a Garage, Essex - Waterproofing a garage conversion with Newton System 500 Cavity Drain Waterproofing

Waterproofing a Garage, Essex

Waterproofing a garage conversion with Newton System 500 Cavity Drain Waterproofing

The client of this magnificent house in Chelmsford had an existing garage area where previous waterproofing attempts had failed, and the space had significant issues with water ingress. Newton Specialist Basement Contractor AP Gooch Ltd was commissioned to the project to design and install a waterproofing system that would not only deal with the water ingress problems but change the use of the space from a garage to a games room for their growing family.

For a list of registered installers expert in waterproofing garages, basements and cellars ring 020 7237 1217 or fill out our form Request Registered Installers

Methodology for Waterproofing this Garage in Essex

After stripping out the existing finishes back to the original building fabric, AP Gooch installed the Newton System 500 cavity drain membrane system. Newton 508 membrane was mechanically fixed to the 3 earth retaining elements of the basement with Newton MultiPlugs. Then Newton Basedrain was rebated into the existing slab in a “horseshoe” formation so that any ingression of water through the walls or the wall/floor junction was guided into the Basedrain zone.

This design works extremely well on this property as being a garage it had an open elevation to the front of the property so that any water entering the Basecrain could then via gravity be discharged out to the open elevation.

Any defects in the floors were protected with Newton 101F applied Type A waterproofing, and then treated with Newton Lime Inhibitor.

Newton 520 20mm deep cavity drain membrane was then fitted to the floor and sealed to the up stand of the Basedrain. A layer on insulation was then placed on the floor membrane followed by a 65mm screed. Once the screed was cured, an independent dry lining system was installed with insulation and services placed within the framework ready for boarding and decorating.

Result

The basement waterproofing and all internal finishes were completed by AP Gooch in a timely and cost effective manner giving a whole new living space for the client.

Benefits of Using Newton System 500 for Waterproofing a Garage

• The BBA accredited Newton Membrane System was applied with minimal surface preparation without expensive preparation works which would
have been required with an applied wet tanking system.
• The layout of the property meant that mechanical means of water extraction was required due to the Basedrain being able to capture the water at the weakest point and guide it out via gravity.
• The client could delegate the whole project to AP Gooch with peace of mind of an insured backed guarantee for the works

Hengoed Care Home is situated in an elevated and exposed position overlooking Swansea Bay, Wales. The Care Home Owners commissioned a large extension to the existing building which includes a balcony overlooking the bay and a small internal terrace courtyard area. Both were built above habitable basement accommodation. There was no requirement to waterproof the basement area due to the construction of a cut off wall; there was a requirement to waterproof the exposed balcony and terrace decks to prevent water ingress from above.

The main contractor laid the new concrete decks to the appropriate falls and prepared the surfaces to receive the John Newton Deck Waterproofing System. Protectahome then applied a coat of Newton 902 Primer to the exposed surfaces to prevent outgasing from the new concrete. Next they prepared the vertical/horizontal junctions and details with Newton Flexitape. The vertical surfaces of the concrete were then treated with Newton 203 RubberFlex-V before the main horizontal surfaces were treated with Newton 201 RubberFlex. Finally Protectahome covered the whole of the two deck areas with Newton 207 DeckDrain, which in turn was overlaid with bedded in patio slabs.
Result

Newton 201 RubberFlex is a 25 Year BBA Approved single part, cold applied liquid waterproofer which once cured provides a seamless completely waterproof polyurethane coating with amazing elastomeric qualities. The Newton 207 DeckDrain membrane with its double cuspated profile helps protect the primary waterproofing below, by allowing free water to depressurise and provides two layers for drainage. In combination this system will ensure that no water will pass through the building fabric of the decks ensuring that the internal areas stay dry and fit for habitable accommodation.
