Windsor Castle

Damp Proofing Windsor Castle

Newton Newlath and Newtonite were used to damp proof Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world and is one of the official residences of Her Majesty The Queen. The original castle was built for William the Conqueror around 1080. The castle had many problems with rising and penetrating damp.

Newton damp proof membranes Newlath and Newtonite were used as a permanent solution to the damp problems.

One of the great advantage of Newton Damp Proof Membranes is that they are deemed ‘reversible’ so can be used on Historic and Listed Buildings, which have very stringent building regulations. Read More…

Damp Proofing a Luxury Apartment Conversion, South London

The Development of twelve new-build luxury town houses with basements and the renovation of an existing Grade II listed three-storey school building into apartments.

Newton 805 Newlath applied to the walls of this apartment conversion

Newton 805 Newlath applied to the walls of this apartment conversion

The single skin brick school building had been derelict with defective pointing and as a consequence had lateral penetration of moisture across all elevations rendering it uninhabitable.

As it is a Listed Building, the facade could not be touched. Newton 805 Newlath damp proof membrane was recommended as an effective and quick method of providing a damp barrier above ground level. This technique of damp proofing is deemed as removable for listed buildings and negates the need of introducing unwanted chemicals into the construction, it is also very fast to apply. Read More…

Treating damp in St George's Hall, Liverpool

Treating damp in St George’s Hall, Liverpool

St George’s Hall is in the centre of Liverpool and is a landmark building steeped in history. As part of the major refurbishment works that have continued through recent years, areas of the building that have been opened to the public have been required to be upgraded.

One area requiring upgrading was the reception and entrance/lobby area on the east side of the building. Visitors wishing to undertake a historical tour enter through this part of the building so it needed to be dry but aesthetically in keeping with the historical tone. Visible dampness and mineral deposits leeching from the surface of the brickwork were creating an unsightly look and damp feeling to the area. This, coupled with the convoluted shape of the walls, required a solution that would retain the character of the structure whilst providing protection from the dampness and associated salting. The solution would also need to conform to the heritage requirement that it should be sympathetic to the underlying structure. Newton 803 Mesh damp proof membrane was ideal. Read More…

Exposed Seaside Cottage, Scotland

Newton 803 Mesh installed to the walls

Newton 803 Mesh installed to the walls

Talmine Cottage is located on the edge of the coast of Tongue Bay and the Atlantic coast in Scotland. The stone structure was suffering from aggressive moisture penetration from the elements. Driving rain and salt air was forcing its way through the structure. The client had tried repointing the stonework, using traditional lime mortars, but this did not prevent the ingress of damp.

John Newton & Company’s technical department recommended installing Newton 803 Newtonite  to the external face of the building. This would create a physical barrier, against the elements and allow the structure to dry out, over time. A Newton Specialist Basement Contractor (NSBC) designed and carried out the works.
