Basement & Cellar Waterproofing Solutions – How System 500 Works
Unlike conventional ’tanking’, Newton System 500 basement waterproofing solution places designed maintainable depressurisation voids at known weaknesses in the structure so that problem water is simply captured and diverted out of the property.
Newton System 500 is one of the easiest basement waterproofing systems to understand and specify. It is recognised by the British Standard and industry experts as the “least likely system to fail”.
Four Steps To A Dry Basement or Cellar

Here Newton System 500 is applied to a new build concrete construction. The system is equally effective when applied to new build or existing properties
- Wall Membrane
Choose an appropriate wall membrane to suit your wall finish. In this example, Newton 508 has been chosen for the walls and is shown with both independent metal frame dry-lining and concrete block wall coverings. - Drainage System
Choose your preferred method of water collection. Here Newton Basedrain is sat above the slab adjacent to a spacer of 50mm of closed cell insulation. - Sump System & Pumps
Choose the most suitable method for removing the water. Here a Titan-Pro sump system collects water from the Newton Basedrain drainage system via two connections of Newton Floordrain. The pumps would be chosen depending on factors such as the pumping head and the type of water collected. - Floor Membrane
Choose the correct floor membrane for your finishes and floor loadings. Newton 508 is shown here with a
65mm screed above.
Newton System 500 As A Tanking Alternative
- No messy and costly substrate preparation works
- Is deemed reversible so can be removed in the future if requested – a requirement for treating listed buidings
- Can be installed in all weather conditions.
- Can be installed with no wet trades meaning no drying out times
- Can be tested to see if it is working once installed – no other system can be
- Is easily repairable should the membrane be damaged by other trades
- Meets the requirements of BS 8102:2009 waterproofing regulations

Basement Waterproofing Case Studies
Listed Building Basement Waterproofing, Royal Courts of Justice
This Grade I listed structure has a labyrinth of unused basement areas. With space at a premium, the courts looked to converting part of the brick basement areas into habitable space. A Newton System 500 waterproofing system was designed and installed by a Newton Specialist Basement Contractor (NSBC), with Newton 508 Mesh chosen as the waterproofing membrane.
The use of Newton 508 Mesh meant that costly and damaging surface preparation was not required. The system could be removed with minor pointing all that would be required to restore the vaults to their original condition in accordance with Listed Building requirements. Read More…
New Build Basement Waterproofing, Worcestershire
A robust waterproofing solution was required for this new build domestic property in Malvern, Worcestershire. The waterproofing system had to be capable of delivering a Grade Three habitable environment (as defined in BS8102) for two bedrooms, a WC and a storage area.
A Newton Specialist Basement Contractor was engaged to design and install a waterproofing system that would meet the site requirements and the contract program. Read More…
Tunnel Waterproofing – Road Tunnel Upgraded to 2012 Olympic Sporting Venue
Charmouth Tunnel was constructed in 1831 and was until 1991 used as a road tunnel forming part of the A35.
The tunnel was converted into a training facility for Target sports including archery and shooting, to be used for the 2012 Olympics. The tunnel suffered from severe damp and water penetration into and through the tunnel. The tunnel is covered by 8 metres of soil. Newton 508 and 508 Mesh were used to drain water that was entering the structure from above and prevent the associated mineral deposit stalactites forming.
Newton System 500 is ideally suited to this type and shape of structure as the water drains naturally behind the membrane following the arch shape down to specially formed floor gullies at the base of the walls which run the length of the structure. Water then discharges naturally to the open elevation at the low end of the tunnel. Read More
Residential Basement, Waterproofing an Existing Basement in Hampshire
Newton System 500 used to convert a damp basement into a dry living space. Because the building was Grade II Listed the clients had to choose a waterproofing system which would be sympathetic to the existing building and deemed reversible – a listed building prerequisite.
BBA approved Newton 508 Mesh membrane was fixed to the walls and vaulted ceiling and a render finish was applied directly to it. The membrane forms an air void around the internal building fabric and should water enter through the structure it is then diverted down to the wall floor junction where it is collected by the Newton Basedrain sitting on the slab.
